In the January 5th, 2015 edition of New Idea they took a look at the upcoming book "5:2 Lifestyle" which takes its own spin on the popular 5:2 diet. The 5:2 diet plan claims to improve weight-loss and health by fasting for two non-consecutive days a week while maintaining a regular exercise plan. The process of fasting means that on those two days a week you cannot exceed 2092 kilojoules, so you don't go completely with out. Now the idea on these fasting days is to eat the most nutritious meals possible with limited kilojoules. They've coined these recipes and meals the 'Super 500'. This is where black rice comes in. It is a nutritious and affordable grain and works well when limiting in take and trying to get the best health return.

One of the recipes showcased in New Idea as a 'Super 500' meal is the "Black Rice, Peas, Asparagus and Mint" recipe.
