How to transition to a plant-based diet

More people than ever are choosing to transition to a plant-based diet. Why? Following a plant-based lifestyle may help in lowering blood sugar and reducing risk of heart disease, for example.

Most importantly people who choose to follow an exclusive plant-based diet no longer want to consume foods that are made from animals. The commitment is not a diet, it is a lifestyle. It is a conscious decision to stop exploiting animals for clothes, food or any other reason. 

Switching to a plant-based diet is easier than you think, especially today with top quality plant-based meats available. There are a few ways to go about transitioning into a plant-based diet, just remember it's important to plan it out before starting.

Plan your transition

Do you want to go cold turkey or make a slow transition? Make a choice that works best for you. Options include:

Step 1: Cut out meat without cutting out eggs, honey or dairy. Add more seeds, nuts, whole grains, vegetables and beans to your diet. When you crave meat, add plant-based meats. There are great options available including chicken, pork, beef and burgers. Once you feel comfortable, start removing all other animal products gradually until your diet is completely plant-based.

Step 2: Gradually cut out meat. Start with the meats you can live without or substitute them with healthy plant-based meats. Make sure you add more vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds for a healthy diet. Keep gradually removing different animal products as you become used to eating more plant-based foods.

Step 3: If you are the sort of person who makes a decision and goes for it—brilliant. Cut out all animal based products right from the start.
